The Department of Shalya Tantra has been one of the most prominent flag-bearers of highest standards of teaching, research and clinical services at the Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.
Since its inception in 1963, the Department has upheld the vision of the honorary founder of BHU, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Ji, to develop an integrated approach of treatment for the highest welfare of society. Under the able leadership of scholars and clinicians of highest order of excellence like Prof. PJ Deshpande, Prof. LM Singh, Dr. PS Shankaran, Prof. KR Sharma, Dr. SN Pathak, Prof. GC Prasad etc., the Department has been actively involved in multi disciplinary research and clinical services and has made substantial contributions in fields of anorectal diseases, wound management, urinary disorders among others.
Revival and establishment of Ksharasutra therapy as one of the successful and globally acknowledged treatment modality for fistula-in-ano has been made possible by the untiring efforts of the stalwarts of our department.
Keeping alive the tradition of research and innovations, Prof. Manoranjan Sahu, former Head of the Department and former Dean, Faculty of Ayurveda, developed and popularized IFTAK technique, the minimal invasive form of Ksharasutra therapy for the successful management of complex anal fistulas.
Establishment of ‘National Resource Center on Ksharasutra Therapy’, a center of excellence for the management of anorectal diseases by Ayurveda and integrated management in 2013, has been a reflection of the vision, leadership and dedicated efforts of the Department towards the management of benign anorectal diseases. The center was established under the guidance of the then Department of AYUSH, MoHFW, Govt. of India as a national facility and referral center and receives an annual attendance of more than 30000 patients from across the nation as well as abroad.
It is equipped with advanced facilities like 3D-Transrectal Ultrasonography, 16 channel high resolution Anorectal Manometry, flexible colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and video proctoscopy for the diagnosis and management of anorectal diseases as well as screening of colonic pathologies and has been visited by many foreign delegations as well as renowned colorectal surgeons for being one of its kind facilities for benign anorectal diseases.
Apart from the Ksharasutra therapy, Department also uses modern facilities like lasers, transanal endoscopic microsurgery etc. to offer the best treatment to the patients.
An endless journey of research and innovations to refine the existing services and develop effective solutions and facilities for other surgical diseases is also continuing.
